I’ll be in a rented “Mustang or similar”. Is the Tail of the Dragon really worth convincing my non-jalop friend I’m travelling with to make the four hour round trip with me?

I’d make that a separate trip. Wife and I got to A sheville and didn’t get in a car but to go to the Bi lt more . If you can beat my record of 15 breweries in 2 days... Congrats. Go to the Top of the Monk and you will have the best cocktails ever.

If your friend gets car sick easily probably not a good idea, based on what I’ve seen.

Haven’t been there personally but driven similar roads not this extreme.

ToTD is a schlep from Asheville, it’s also overrated. When will you be in Asheville? My wife and I are planning a quick trip just before Easter.

Other fun roads in that area, closer than ToTD are covered in this Reddit thread .

That said, ToTD is fun for the experience and, if you go, make sure to do the Cherohala Skyway as well. If you go north, the roads around Little Switzerland are super fun (ie - Diamondback/ 226A).

no. ToTD is best enjoyed with car/bike people. Do not make a 8 hour trip for them.  they will be miserable, and you will hear nothing but bitching and wont get to enjoy the road.

Yea, I wouldn’t do it with non-car people. What you do need to do is go to Burial for be ers and Curate for dinner.

I was thinking Farm Burger for every single meal.

If he doesn’t have dinner reservations at Curate already, he’s not going to be able to go. They usually have a number of openings for lunch t hough.

I walked in at like 7PM on Thursday a couple weeks ago and my wife and I sat at the bar, no reservation, no  wait.

That’s fortunate.  Last couple times I tried without a reservation for the bar area it was full, granted that was on a weekend.

Even if they agree, the return trip will be miserable for both of you. On the plus side, they’ll be puking in your rental car and not your actual car...

For real though, I drove that road in a damn Dodge Caliber and had a blast. As long as your friend is somewhat tolerant, I’d say go for it.

I agree, better in this case to drive an hour and play on 226A until the friend can’t stand it.

It’s cool, but probably not worthwhile 4+ hours with people who are going to be sick 4 miles into it. It’s also really crowded on the weekends (not sure when you’re going).

If your friend isn’t into cars or fun roads, it’ll be 318 corners of complaining. A better use of time would be to take the advice of other Oppos and explore the local scenery. There are indeed a lot of breweries in the area if your friend is into them and the drive in general is pretty nice. Save the Dragon (and the Cherohala Skyway) for when you're alone.
